One of my goals this year is to create less waste - for me that involves things like doing more recycling instead of just throwing something in the garbage bin, making use of reusable grocery bags when shopping, finding ways to make an item I need out of another item I might otherwise be getting rid of, and using more sustainable products in my every day life.
This week, I did a little recycle/upcycle with a small heavy cream carton. This project took some time, but it did turn out pretty cute (even if it's not exactly perfect). I figured that I could take some of the cute scrapbooking paper I have lying around and cover the carton to make a little box. I really don't do a whole lot of scrapbooking, although I have a large amount of scrapbooking supplies. Thankfully, all those supplies come in handy when I try my hand at one of these recycle/upcycle projects!
The first thing I did was to wash out the carton and dry it thoroughly. Then I cut the top portion off as evenly as possible. As a side note, the more even the edges are the better, I didn't exactly measure or draw a line to cut on, which I kind of regretted later on.
I wasn't able to take any photos of the project in process...basically, I started off by covering the four sides of the box with one sheet of the orange paper. I used double sided tape to fasten the orange paper together in the back of the carton and also to fasten the paper to the bottom of the carton. The inside of the box is lined with purple cardstock and I attached some fabric flowers to the corner. I really only had to use the flowers to hide that fact that the purple cardstock didn't quite meet in the corner and left a little gap that looked funny...
And that's the completed project!! If there seems to be any interest in a tutorial of any kind, I may revisit this particular project in the future. All in all, it was a fun outlet for my creative, crafty side and it is currently serving its purpose quite well by holding some items on my nightstand.
Happy Crafting!
