Shopping at a local farmers market can be very advantageous for people who eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. We have a public market open all year in downtown Rochester - you can find pre-packaged food, fruits, veggies, handmade goods, and all kinds of gadgets and trinkets there. We also have a smaller farmer's market closer to us, which is less of the gadgets and trinkets and more of the fresh foods. Hubby & I make it a point to try and get to the downtown market on Saturdays, not only is it a fun experience but you can get some really good deals and feel better about buying from nearby farms and not from a big supermarket!
3 pounds of pears
3 pounds of oranges
3 avocados
1 bunch of bananas (about 1 1/2 lbs)
1 pound of strawberries
1 HUGE bunch of flat-leaf kale
1/2 gallon of apple cider
=$14.00
I start of every morning with some version of a "green" smoothie, containing banana, avocado, and kale, along with some other fruits such as strawberries, pears, apples, or mangoes. Hubby really likes oranges, and he will occasionally indulge in strawberries dipped in powdered sugar. The pears, avocados, bananas, kale and strawberries will be a good 7 days worth of smoothies, but I might have the apple cider downed in just a few days ;-)
Our Sam's Club has this new machine called a Freeosk which dispenses free samples of products if you scan your membership card. This week they had samples of Kellogg's fruity snacks (gluten free!). Apparently these machines have not made it into all Sam's Clubs yet, so keep an eye out for one near you!
I also got a coupon for a free Wholly Guacamole product! Who doesn't love free food???
